If estimates of an individual gay and bisexual man's risk of death is truly needed for legal or other purposes, then people making these estimates should use the same actuarial tables that are used for all other males in that population. Gay and bisexual men are included in the construction of official population-based tables and therefore these tables for all males are the appropriate ones to be used.

If it well known that Harvey Milk was a pedophile who had affairs
with underage teenage boys . How is he, in any way, a good role
model for children ? Shame on the governor and the legislature .

Our precious children are born with prewired spiritual needs which
are completely ignored in the public schools
but they want to propagandize them in a lifestyle
that , in a very real way, is dangerous to their HEALTH ?

Remember, 70% of all AIDS death in California in
the past thirty years were to homosexual men who make up about
1% of the population . And the average lifespan of a homosexual
man is something like 44 years . GOD HELP US>

Beetlebabee, I would like to say that I don’t SUFFER with same sex attraction. The only people who suffer with it are the poor confused people whose friends and families have shunned them in the hopes of forcing them back into their narrow interpretation of their Families way of life. You speak of redefining marraige as a weakness yet you offer no explanation of how. Unfortunately this is something that I hear all too often. Can you provide some concrete evidence of this without falling back on scripture? My husband and I are married. Legal or not we share in all the bonds that hetero’s do and we are happier than just about anyone we know. We have two great adopted kids that we give all the love and support that we can to. We both have great jobs and travel with the kids almost monthly. I fail to see any of this weakness of which you speak. Please, elaborate….. ( sorry for any mispellings/typos, I typed this on my phone)

Those who suffer with Same Sex Attraction or SSA are not born that way. It is an acquired condition. No offense is intended at all. Not all people who feel same sex attraction condone the homosexual lifestyle.

LA, in your opinion, what good DID Harvey Milk do? Why should his name be honored? Is that reason enough to devote one of our precious public school learning days to? What other social agenda items deserve their own school day?

Now, if I were to have my druthers, I’d probably choose a Jesus Christ Day over Harvey Milk Day, and don’t think you’re going to cop out with the guy in the red suit, because he is NOT Jesus Christ. No, if we were going to have a Jesus Christ Day, we’d talk about the man, his life, his mission, the good he accomplished right? We’d possibly have a prayer, or at least discuss what a prayer was. We may even have flyers with scriptures containing his words of kindness and compassion.

There’s more MLK in Martin Luther King day than Jesus Christ in “Winter Break”. Just try and have MLK day without mentioning MLK, his words, his teachings or anything he accomplished. Try doing that with Jesus Christ day in public schools. No go right?

Now what you’re talking about is a private observance, which Harvey Milk supporters are welcome to do. Please, go. Celebrate. Do whatever you like. You are free to choose your life, your lifestyle, celebrate anything you want, but don’t expect society to be muscled into following suit.

Thank you, Realist, for sharing Harvey’s words. That means that a lot of people who read this blog will have a chance to learn something about what he stood for. Some will probably try not to learn anything about Harvey Milk, and that is unfortunate.

Give me a break! Heterosexuality is promoted in society every day of the year in the movies, on TV shows, in advertising, on Fox News, on conservative blogs like this one, and from the pulpits of some large religious organizations. And yet you guys are freaking out about people saying nice things about a gay man for one day out of the year?

Now, I think there already is a Jesus Christ day, and I think it’s called Christmas. Just about everybody gets the day off from work and school on Christmas. Jesus Christ Day is a paid holiday for a whole lot of people, too. Every neighborhood in every city and every town in the United States has many nearby churches where people can go, for free, and worship Jesus in a stunning variety of ways. Each of these church organizations gets a tax exemption from the government for their trouble. So I believe that your freedom of worship is quite safe here. LGBT people aren’t even going to get Harvey Milk Day off from work. So congratulations, Christians! You still have a way privileged status over gay people. So why are you so scared?

Travis, where does it say that gays are anti family? I disagree. There are many people with SSA who support and honor the traditional family. It is only those who insist on redefining what a family is, and what marriage is, that present the threat to families. To divorce marriage from it’s ties to children and family, to reduce it to a mere piece of paper—a contract between any group of consensual adults— is to drain the very life from the concept of marriage and family. The inherent weakness of those relationships is something the participants choose to accept. Forcing children and society to accept that weakness and even celebrate it as a replacement for wholesome family ties is yes, too much to ask.

You are free. Do as you please. You have that right. You do not have the right to demand society’s stamp of approval on your choice.

The author would have you believe that gays are “anti-family”. Nothing could be further from the truth. We grew up in families and we love our families. We think the heterosexual family setup is fantastic! We would just like the right to have our own families and I think any reasonable person can see that you can have both straight and gay families without one being a threat to the other. I think that we all need to ignore the inflamitory speech that this author is using. Gays aren’t attacking your belief system and we certainly don’t want to attack your family life. We just want the same rights to use in our own way. Is that too much to ask?

California’s public schools are performing terribly. They are miles behind homeschoolers and private schoolers academically and in every other area. And Harvey Mild Day helps….how? It shows you how backwards our state government is, and how little they care about actual education. To them the schools are just a means for social control. The fact that a child in India can learn twice as much in a shorter period of time, then come to America better prepared to succeed in our universities than the products of our over-liberal public schools doesn’t even shame them. They’re still looking for ways to further waste time and taxpayer money.
