Santa Monica Pier Tax Protest—Tea Party!!

Santa Monica Pier Tax Protest

I attended the Santa Monica Pier Tax Protest this afternoon, it was a blast!  We had 1,500 people there by 3:00 and the numbers continued to grow through the afternoon. In Van Nuys they had 3,000 protesters and in Sacramento they had 8,000 with many thousands more among the over 800 registered tax protest parties across the United States today.

In California we’ve suffered through the largest state tax increase in history, on top of the national tax increases.  Now we’re being asked to convene for a special election to vote in yet ANOTHER set of tax increases—-and this amid reports that yet again the state is expecting new deficits.

It’s time to clean house up there in  Sacramento.  After that, D.C.!

American Flag Unwelcome at Tax Day Tea Party in Sacramento

News from CRI:  As Tea Party patriots rallied outside the California State Capitol to oppose the increasing burden of government, Capitol security forces assured that no sign of disagreement would enter the Capitol building, including American flags.

Capitol Resource Institute distributed hundreds of the flags to those assembled and was shocked to find out that the flags had to be discarded before entering the state house. “We could not believe that they would prohibit the American flag in the Capitol,” said Karen England, Executive Director of CRI. “I am still not clear why this is prohibited. The guard at the door originally cited safety concerns, but after consulting with his superiors the rationale became a general prohibition on signs and banners.”

This is not the first time that CRI has had a run in with Capitol security over displays of patriotism. This past summer, students from CRI’s popular City on the Hill leadership camp stopped in the Capitol rotunda to sing the National Anthem. This has become a tradition with no opposition until this last year. Armed security demanded that the students stop singing. After a strongly worded letter from attorneys at Pacific Justice Institute, the students were able to return and sing without interruption two days later.

“I want to believe that this is just government out of control,” said England. “But first the National Anthem and now the flag are banned from the Capitol building. It is hard not to conclude that there is an aversion to patriotism.”

See this from RightSoup: “The American people are fed up with Washington’s irresponsible spending spree,” said Newt Gingrich, General Chairman of American Solutions. “There are better solutions than big government and higher taxes to create jobs and get the economy moving again.”

“American Solutions is proud to partner with the Nationwide Tea Party Coalition to communicate this message to our elected officials,” Gingrich added.

The NTPC was formed February 20, 2009 by three grassroots organizations: Dontgo Movement (Dontgo), Top Conservatives on Twitter (TCOT), and Smart Girl Politics (SGP).

“These Tea Party events offer a highly visible point-of-focus for the burgeoning movement of spontaneous public demonstrations. Whether people live in New York or Wichita, they can find an April 15th event nearby and come out to voice their opposition to the irresponsible spend-borrow-tax policies of the Obama Administration and politicians in Congress,” said Michael Patrick Leahy, founder of TCOT.

“The purpose of our Coalition is to help people organize simultaneous, nationwide events,” he explained.

Organizers are working to bring together a broad coalition of conservatives, Blue Dog Democrats, independents, and Libertarians to urge members of Congress to stop their reckless big government spending or we will vote them out of office.

Round 1 was the February 27 Nationwide Chicago Tea Party, which was organized in less than a week by the NTPC, and brought together over 30,000 activists in 50 cities. The theme of Round 1 was “Repeal the Pork or Retire: Our Message to Congress.”

The website to participate in a local tea party, or to start an April 15 tea party in your area, can be found at . The theme of Round 2 is “Repeal the Pork, Cut Taxes.”

“To me, one of the most remarkable things is that none of the three Coalition organizations existed a year ago,” said Stacy Mott, founder of Smart Girl Politics. The “oldest” group is Dontgo, founded 8 months ago in the Summer of 2008.

“All three of our groups focus on rapid-response citizen activism. We use the latest technology tools to coordinate the simultaneous activities of tens of thousands – and soon to be hundreds of thousands – of activists across the country,” Mott said.

Eric J. Odom, founder of Dontgo Movement and technology expert added, “By using Twitter, Ning sites, Facebook, Blackberries, phone conference calls, blogs and other Internet-based tools, we have been able to coordinate the volunteer efforts of tens of thousands of Americans across the country at lightning speed. I find this proficiency with technology combined with passion and action at the grassroots level truly inspiring.”

Perhaps the most unique aspect of the grassroots Coalition is that none of the groups have an actual “headquarters.” Instead, the Nationwide Tea Party movement is located around the kitchen tables, laptops, tweets and blogs of the hundreds of thousands of men and women across the country. These everyday people give their time and treasure to the noble cause to which their hearts and minds are devoted: returning limited government to the United States of America.
